At Soul’s Harbor, we believe that dignity shouldn’t come with a price tag. Unlike a traditional thrift store that sells donated goods to fund operations, our Free Store exists solely to provide essential items directly to those in need at no cost. Specifically, whether someone is moving from the street into their first apartment or a family has lost everything in a crisis, our store is here to help them rebuild.
A Resource for Rebuilding Lives
The Free Store is a vital resource for our shelter residents and the broader Joplin community. We provide the practical items necessary for daily life and long-term stability:
- Clothing & Footwear: From professional attire for job interviews to sturdy work boots and seasonal essentials like coats, hats, and gloves.
- Household Goods: Kitchenware, small appliances, and linens to help individuals and families turn a house into a home.
- Furniture: When available, we provide beds, tables, and chairs to those transitioning into permanent housing.
- Personal Hygiene: Soap, shampoo, deodorant, and other essential toiletries that are often unavailable through other assistance programs.
How the Free Store Works
Our store operates on a referral and “need-based” basis to ensure that resources are reaching those who need them most.
- Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
- Location: 817 S. Main St., Joplin, MO.
- Accessing Items: Individuals can visit our main office to inquire about receiving items from the store. Our staff works with each person to identify their specific needs and provide the appropriate supplies.
How the Community Can Support
Because everything in our store is given away for free, it follows that we rely entirely on the quality donations of our neighbors.
- Donate Gently Used Items: We gratefully accept clean, functional clothing, furniture, and household goods. (Please call ahead for large furniture donations to ensure we have floor space!).
- Donate New Essentials: New socks, undergarments, and full-sized hygiene products are always our highest-priority needs.
- Volunteer: We need volunteers to help sort donations, organize the store racks, and assist guests in finding what they need.
